Is it possible to be addicted to computer games and are any support groups available thru the university?

My son is away at college but for several years, before he left, played computer games for countless hours at a time.

He has canceled several classes and it fits a pattern. He plays Computer games all night and can't get up for AM classes..Is it possible to be addicted to computer games and are any support groups available thru the university?
yes it is possible... with the understanding of addiction which in part is doing to the point of compulsion... if there is not a support group there will be perhaps you can start one seriously
it's very possible. i was at berkeley, and now northwestern, and i've never encountered support groups. good luck... maybe an intervention? Is it possible to be addicted to computer games and are any support groups available thru the university?
Well, I'm not sure if there's an actual term for it, but the games like Everquest or World of Warcraft are very addicting. I have no idea why. I was never into them that much. But I have seen it happen. They're called MMORPGS, and the way my friend got over it? He found a girl. Girls are very expensive, and she monopolized his time. It aint a perfect solution, but it works. trust me.
O boy. I had some similar problems with myself ( I love playing computer games) so I totally understand. I assume he likes multi-player games because it gives you a false sense of being in a community or socializing. So your computer friends, teammates because your main point of life. So your priority gets sqeuwed. Its more important make the 4am team battle than to make it to the 8am Psych class.

Unfortuantely, I don't know HOW or WHAT type of intervention is possible. The best way is if he plays a game for 24 hours and gets really really sick. He needs to "get it" himself. Is it possible to be addicted to computer games and are any support groups available thru the university?
Yes addiction to commputer games, especially Multi Player, Role Playing Games or RPGs is real. I heard a story on National Public Radio a few months ago, on a new treatment center. I don't know where it is though. The show made it sound like addiction to these games is becomeing common, and is just starting to be addressed. There are support groups available. Sorry I don't have any exact names or locations.
